Sinead O’Connor has converted to Islam and changed her name.

Her new name, which is said to translate to ‘martyrs’ or ‘witnesses’ in Arabic, comes after she previously changed her name to Magda Davitt last year.

‘This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim,’ she wrote.

‘This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada.’

She later tweeted:

I should have said the Q’raan CONFIRMS previous scriptures Except where it points out illegal alterations in those scriptures. [sic]

Made by those who did not submit themselves as they ought have, to God. Who by the way never gets any royalties when people buy the Bible.

She later tweeted:

Here is my 1st attempt at singing the Azan. I got some pronouncition wrong because emotions took me from my page… but there’ll be hundreds of others onstage to come … [sic]

The Irish singer famously tore up a picture of the pope during a Saturday Night Live performance before getting ordained by an Irish Orthodox priest in the 1990s.

However, it looks as if those days are long behind her.

‘Sorry re all the mistakes in my Azan,’ she later wrote on the social media site. ‘1st attempt. When I’ve practised it 30 times I’m gonna make the world stop turning.’ [sic]

O’Connor later revealed she’d received her first hijab from her friend Elaine, saying:

My best friend Elaine just gave me my 1st hijab and she got chills all over her body when I put it on.

‘Not gonna post a photo because is intensely personal. And I’m an ugly old hag. But I’m a very, very, very happy old hag.’ [sic]

She does, however, appear to be wearing some sort of head garment in her recent Twitter uploads, thought to be a hijab.

Earlier this week she revealed she’d be collaborating with the Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood, actor Cillian Murphy, Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason and singer Imelda May for a new EP release.
