The Most Googled Question Of 2017 Is Terrifying

Remember this time last year when we all thought 2017 couldn’t possibly be any worse than 2016? Oh how wrong we were.

Something about this year just pips last year, but I can’t quite pinpoint just what about it trumps 2016.

Aside from the obvious, though, there have been plenty of horrible events over the past year which have been just outright depressing.

But which of these issues has resonated with people the most? Well to answer that question, we look to our most trusted overlords Google, who have released the most Googled question of the year.

Its data revealed that among the top questions were: How do wildfires start? How to calm a dog during a storm? How to make a protest sign?

The top searched news item in both the UK and the US related to Hurricane Irma, and it’s not hard to see why.

In the UK, this search was followed by the Manchester bomb attack, the Grenfell Tower fire, North Korea and the London Bridge attack.

In the US, the Las Vegas shooting ranked second, followed by the eclipse, Hurricane Harvey and Bitcoin.

But the most Googled question is actually a lot more terrifying and downright depressing: What is DACA?

If you’re wondering just what that means, then you’re not in the minority, hence the most Googled question.

Well, basically, DACA refers to the scheme which allows temporary protection to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the US as children, and it’s been axed.

As of March 26, 2018, it is estimated that 1,000 people per day could lose their right the Deferred Action for Childhood status.

At the time, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said:

To have a lawful system of immigration that serves the national interest, we cannot admit everyone who would like to come here. That is an open border policy and the American people have rightly rejected it.

Therefore, the nation must set and enforce a limit on how many immigrants we admit each year and that means all can not be accepted.

Trump decided to axe the scheme, and rather than help draft up a replacement scheme which won’t leave an estimated 800,000 out in the cold, he left it up to Congress.

The top searched people of 2017 also reveal just what kind of a year we’ve had, for those who were wondering.

Among the top 10 include Gal Gadot, Milo Yiannopolous, Kathy Griffin, Melania Trump, and Kevin Spacey.

The most searched person of the year was NBC journalist Matt Lauer who was dismissed this year as a result of ‘inappropriate sexual behaviour’.

Second and third were Meghan Markle and Harvey Weinstein respectively. What a bleak year.

Let’s just hope the Google searches for 2018 are a lot more rosy, we could all do with a year off.
