Not many people thought they would be waking up to find out there is a new women’s bantamweight champion in the UFC – because that means someone would have had to get through Ronda Rousey first.
But Holly Holm shocked the entire planet last night at UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia, when she not only defeated the greatest women’s MMA fighter to have ever stepped in the octagon, but destroyed her.
The underdog had hardly any backing from UFC fans prior to the event, with any sort of punt on her winning having some pretty good odds (there will be some rich people out there this morning!), but it’s the fashion in which she did it that shocked the most.
After winning the first round, which became Ronda’s first ever round loss, Holm quickly took control of the second, dazing Ronda with a flurry of punches that saw her drop her guard. Then, the boxing veteran clattered Rousey with a left high kick (of all moves) that sent the champion crashing to the mat.

There was no way back for Rousey, but if the inevitable rematch happens, will she regain her title? It’s hard to believe that she would ever be beaten at bantamweight – but this may be a sign of the women’s roster really getting started…
