We all have that one friend or family member who’s not only incredibly flatulent, but when they do fart, it absolutely reeks.
If you don’t know that person, well then it’s probably you. In my case, my boyfriend is the villain, leaving me running round the house, bottle of air freshener in hand, hunting the smell down to kill it.
Now there’s an image for you!

Today it may be time to bin the air freshener though as a company called Shreddies – no relation to the cereal – has now come to our rescue.
Shreddies have produced a product they describe as a ‘flatulence filtering cushion’ which claims to prevent the smell of the fart from leaking out.
And yes, I’m as intrigued as you are.

Available in either black or grey, the company describes the cushion as follows:
Our flatulence filtering cushion can be used at home, work or on the go, thanks to it’s lightweight and discreet design.
This cushion was designed to give you the added reassurance you’re looking for. Machine washable cover.
Priced at £28 it’s admittedly quite costly, but I’m sure plenty of people would welcome it into their lives.
However, it’s important to remember, last year, scientists suggested smelling your partner’s farts could make you live longer so if you can’t afford the cushion, there’s always that:
Specialising in flatulence, Shreddies have really nailed that unique corner of the market also making underwear for both men and women if your farts smell particularly bad.
Made ‘with love’ in the UK, you can even get a pair of ‘flatulence filtering’ jeans or pyjamas if you really fancy it.
Explaining how their technology works, Shreddies say:
Shreddies flatulence filtering garments feature an activated carbon back panel that absorbs all flatulence odours.
Due to its highly porous nature, the odour vapours become trapped and neutralised by the cloth, which is then reactivated by simply washing the garment.
Previous research published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found activated carbon underwear to be the most effective method of removing flatulence odours.
The garments have gone through rigorous testing, and findings from research by De Montfort University were presented at the 86th Textile Institute World Conference; the fabric ‘was found to remove sulphide and ethyl mercaptan so effectively that it can filter odours 200 times the strength of the average flatus emission’.
The fabric remains effective for the life of the garment (2 – 3 years) providing the care instructions are followed correctly. The Shreddies motto is ‘fart with confidence’ and our garments ensure just that.
What a motto – forget ‘just do it’, Shreddies has won here.
While anyone can wear Shreddies’ products, the company does recommend them for those who have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), Gastritis, Crohn’s disease, Dyspepsia and Colitis.
