Following the airing of the Game of Thrones episode The Last of the Starks, there was only one thing people could talk about – that Starbucks cup.

Although the hit HBO show is famous for its high production values, a Starbucks coffee cup managed to sneak its way into a scene, distracting fans.

While the attention should have been on the tense dynamic between Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), a coffee cup sitting on the table between them stole the show.

Many questioned whether a ‘Starkbucks’ had opened recently in Winterfell, while others wondered how the huge team behind the show didn’t notice the mistake.

Joining in with the joke, HBO released a statement which simply read:

The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered a herbal tea.

HBO also took the decision to quickly and quietly digitally remove the cup, so it won’t appear in any new airings of the episode on TV and streaming services.

We will always remember you though, so let’s pour one out in memory.

While many of the jokes focused on it being a Starbucks cup, a source told The Wall Street Journal it didn’t actually come from the huge chain.

The report stated:

As it turns out, the cup came from the production’s craft services and not from Starbucks, according to a person familiar with the situation.

This didn’t stop Starbucks from taking advantage of the viral joke though, cashing in as much as possible, responding with a tweet which read:

TBH we’re surprised she didn’t order a Dragon Drink.

Since the cup became a viral hit, fans have been attempting to figure out who it belonged to.

Many believe it to be Sophie Turner’s, aka Sansa Stark, after a photo of her holding a cup which looks identical was discovered by fans.

Check it out:

Of course there is no visible name on the cup, but that didn’t stop the internet from generating memes based on this clue.

A dedicated Twitter account wrote:

Jon: A coffee for Jon, please

Sansa: a coffee for AEGOR TARGARYEN

Liz meanwhile tweeted:

Is it me or did Sansa plant the Starbucks cup in front of Dany as part of an elaborate plan to take her down?

With the season finale approaching, I am sure it won’t be long until we found out whether Sansa’s scheme succeeds.
